오늘 하루

40대 아저씨 아줌마들이 하면 않되는것중에 외로워서 페북에서 수다 떠는거라는 말, 정말 공감간다 ... 그래서, 오늘부터 페북은 땡 ... :-)

정말 오랜만에 밥한끼 먹을시간도 없는 치열한 하루를 보냈다. 이렇게 살어야 사는거 같으니 ... 참 병이다 병 ... :-)

오늘도 잊기위해 그러나 기억하기위해 열심히 산 하루
하루에 끝에 편안한 휴식이 되었음 하지만
오늘도 눈감고 시간을 세고 있을 나를 본다
뭔 생각이 그리 많은지 하지만
실제 따지고 보면 아무것도 아닌것
밥값하고 살고 싶지만
또한 이기적이고 게으른 날보며
매일 속상하고 참 불쌍하다
하지만 괜찮아 그리 살어도 괜찮어
어제 후회말고 내일 걱정말고
오늘만 즐겁게 치열하게 살자
행복은 작은것에 있는것
내일은 훈훈한 밤길 걸어보자
밤 풀냄새 맡어 보고 행복해 보자
추억들이 보고 싶다
추억들이 맡고 싶다

Book List - Daemon : Daniel Suarez

Wow ... just ... wow ... 632 pages which I just "run" through it. Terrifying & gruesome, but such a ... beauty. I just loved it. It stretch the "boundary" of things that I thought I know about the technology & linkage to the real world. I just cannot believe this is his first novel. Can't wait for the next one.

So many elements of things that I love, technology, programming, gaming, social interactivity, new gadgets, disruptive innovation ... packed into single story.

Just brilliant !!

The Art of Racing In the Rain : Garth Stein

Saturday night before my flight, while trying to get refill for the home printer, I stop by Borders to get couple of books to get me through my biz trip next day. I was just "looking" & picking up one book in random & one of the employees just passed by me, and gushed over how good that book was for him. As eternal sucker, I bought it, but I had my own trepidation. I always like to have recommendation, but also had share of disappointment as well.

What can I say ... it was "exactly" what I needed in my current circumstance. It was like God "knew" what I need to hear & somehow steer me to this book. Just Amazing !!

"The car goes where the eyes go". "Exactly", exactly & exactly ... if your eyes are on track, you keep driving, but if your eyes are on the wall (because you worried about crashing into it), you "will" make the car drive into the wall. In a life, if you worries about specifically things, it will lead you "into" it. "Exactly", that's what I been doing for last several months. Thinking & keeping my eyes on the wall ... how blind I was ...

"That which you manifest is before you". So simple, yet, so complicated. Everything in my life is before me because "I" decide it to be that way. Brutal truth, yet, so elegant. On the positive note, "I" can change life's direction, if I want to (i.e. I am not helpless victim anymore).

I will keep my eyes on the track. I "will" direct my life to go the way I want. The life is like driving car in the rain. Fast, with many obstacle, unpredictable, dangerous ... but, if you know how to "anticipate" & "deal" with it, it could be beyond "wonderful" ... I want to enjoy my life & enjoy this gift from God.

I never really was into the driving (or dog) before, but man ... I am itching to do some driving this weekend !!

The Associate : John Grisham

Another of Grisham paperback I killed over long flight. Same as any other I read, meaningless but great on killing times. I read 430 somewhat pages in single shot (mostly from SF to Frankfurt route). It's like one of those shameful little addiction. You don't want to admit you like it ... but, can't help ... liking it. Although for this one, it could have better ending. It feels like it needs another 100 pages ... I know you did your best, but I "know" you can do better, John ...

Begining of Crowdsourcing L10N

지난 몇주 동안 L10N 업계에 벌어진 새로운 발전 상황을 보면, 오랫동안 잠자고 있었던 “Excitement” 이 드디어 정체된 이 업계에도 다시 벌어지고 있다는 느낌이다. 미국의 소셜 사이트 (i.e. 미국 판 싸이월드) 페이스북 (Facebook: FB) 의 2주전 발표 (http://developers.facebook.com/news.php?blog=1&story=308! &_fb_noscript=1) 에 의하면 많은 사람들 이 말하던 Community Based Translation through Social Computing 이 얼마나 우리에게 가까이 와있고 얼마나 현실적으로 가능한지 보여주고 있다. 물론, FB의 케이스가 모든 번역이나 L10N 프로젝트에 모두 그대로 쓸 수 있는 건 아니지만, 현실적 가능성을 보여주었다는 데에 중요성이 있다.

이 발표 이후 우리 회사의 Sales 조직 내에서는 과연 이것이 얼마나 우리 LSP (Localization Service Provider)에게 현실적 위협이 되고 그리고 이 발표가 우리 실적에 어떤 안 좋은 영향을 주는지 말들이 많았다. 결론적으로만 말하자면 현재 내가 생각에는 이 발전 방향이 업계에 더 많은 (그리고 더 다른 방향의) 시장을 주지, 좋지 않은 영향은 그리 크지 않다고 생각한다.

이 문제는 근본적으로 우리 업계가 무엇을 제공하는 업계이냐는 질문에서 시작한다고 본다. 번역을 판다고 생각한다면 이발전상이 큰 위협이 될 수 있다. 하지만 L10N 업계를 Process Control 을 핸들링하고 제공하는 업계로 생각한다면 FB 케이스는 또 다른 기회와 판로가 될 수 있다고 생각한다.

한 단편적인 예를 들자면. 만약 회사 A가 회사에서 개발한 신제품 B에 관련된 Website를 여러 언어로 공동체 번역 (Community Based Translation)을 통해 하고자 한다. 이 상황에서 첫 번째 근본적인 질문은, 과연 번역가들이 왜 보수 없이 번역을 할 것 인가이다. 그 대답은, 회사는 언제나 금전적인 것뿐만이 아니라 여러 가지 다른 “상품”들을 가지고 있다. 이 예에서 본다면 신제품 B 가 될 수도 있고 그걸 싸게 살수 있는 쿠폰이 될 수도 있다. 그럼 두 번째 질문, 왜 회사는 어차피 돈이 들어갈 거면 그냥 번역회사에 맡기면 될걸 이렇게 힘들께 할까? 여기서도 본질적인 질문이 있다. A 회사에서 신제품 B 에 관련해서 Website에 선전 하는 이유가 무엇일까? 너무 당연한 이야기이지만 Marketing의 한 방법이다. 그렇다면 이 공동체 번역도 유저들을 이끌고 Viral Marketing을 할 수 있는 좋은 통로 중에 하나가 될 수가 있다.

이모든 과정 중에서 FB tool 이나 FB Platform & Connect을 쓰면 공동체 번역을 수행할 수 있지만, 그건 말처럼 간단한 문제가 아니다. FB Developer Site (http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Internationalization) 을 보면 알 수 있듯이 공동체 번역 전에 Pre-packaging단계와 번역후의 Post-repacking 단계는 L10N Process를 모르는 조직에서는 쉽게 할 수 있는 문제가 아니다. 그리고 공동체 번역 할 사람들을 모으고, 그 인원들을 Motivate 시키고, Coordination 하는 일도, 그런 Freelancer 조직을 이끌어본 Process Control 하는 경험이 없다면 힘든 일이다. 이 간단한 예를 보면 알 수 있듯이, 이 새로운 시장은 우리 업계뿐만 아니라, 이걸 사용하는 우리 고객들의 입장에서도 무궁무진하다.

이걸 적고 / 생각해보고 있는 내 입장에서도 많이 도전이 되고, 지금까지 얼마나 내가 정체된 생각을 하고 있었는지 반성하게 된다. 앞으로 이 토픽과 새로운 다른 발전 방향 (e.g. MT etc.)들에 대해 더 많이 생각해보고, 이 블로그 포스팅이 끝이 아닌 이 발전 방향을 기록하고 연구하는 시작이 되었으면 한다.

John Smith

I was on the way home (Portland) from weekend management meeting at Brussels. It was last leg of the trip, and it was from Washington, DC to Portland. After 12 hours on the road & air, I was really tired & disoriented. Then, this ... shows ? documentary ? as flight movie.

The idea itself is not new (& probably has been done some place & some other time before). They shows life of different John Smith in different stage of their life. i.e. They have 7 John Smith (at the age of 2, 8, 23, 36, 46, 70, 79) living in different part of USA & try to "represent" different part of life & shows different things that we go through in the life.

Typical show, but, somehow, in my current state, it moved me profoundly.

We all knows, in theoretical sense, that family is important, dream is important, we are all born to die. But, it really gives me another perspective of where I am in my life. However short my life so far, I went through so many things in my life that I need to be thankful & amazed on the things that actually happened / achieved. And now, it's ok to be afraid, it's ok to be upset, and it's "natural" for us to be in this constant change of state, because we are who we are .... as human being.

I am going to call my mom more often. I want to "really" talk to dad. I want to spend more time with my boys. I want to thankful every single day on the role given to me at work. I want to show how much I appreciate people I work with. And, more than anything, I want to say to myself ... Sung, you are ok, you are doing fine, don't freak out ... just enjoy this little thing call .... life ...

People says that the life is marathon, but the fact is that actually, in the grand scheme, it's too short to even call it as sprint ... :-)
